Box stoves are small stoves valued for their compact design and efficient burn. They come in three sizes with varying degrees of decoration. Early box stoves feature a Federal motif depicting stripes and other patriotic images. They were first seen during the Revolutionary war where they were particularly valued due to their portability and efficient burn.  Victorian models often featured designs which featured birds, flowers, and scrollwork.

Contemporary box stoves come in modern styles but continue to a six-plate design. A six-plate design refers to stoves which have four pieces that construct the sides and two on the top and bottom that makes six. A lip extends from the side to prevent any ash from rolling onto the floor.
